Five Steps for Handling a Car Accident in Wilson, NC

A car crash can be traumatic so it’s important to know how you’ll handle this type of emergency. For instance, do you know what steps to take after an accident? Or where you can go to for Mazda repairs afterwards?

Medlin Mazda has put together a list of things to do after a car accident.

Step 1: Assess any Injuries

The first thing to do is make sure everyone is okay. Assess whether there are any injuries to yourself, your passengers, or anyone in the other vehicles involved.

It’s always a good idea to keep a First Aid kit in the car. You can treat minor cuts and bruises yourself, although you may still want to get checked out by a doctor. If there are serious injuries, call 911 right away.

Step 2: Report the Accident

Call to report the accident. An officer will be able to assess the scene and determine fault. They will write up a report that you’ll need when you contact your insurance company.

Here in North Carolina, youre required to report the accident to the law enforcement agency where the accident occurred, as well as the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Be sure to check the local laws, as these can differ from county to county.

Step 3: Exchange Insurance Information

Don’t forget to exchange insurance information with the other drivers involved in the accident. Again, this will be important when it’s time to contact your insurance company and DMV. The accident report given to you at the scene may include insurance information.

Step 4: Contact your Insurance Company

You’ll need to contact your insurance company to report the accident as soon as possible, especially when it comes to personal injury claimsThere is no statute of limitations to report a personal injury claim in North Carolina, but other states require you to report accidents within 10 to 14 days.

Step 5: Have Your Vehicle Repaired

Once you’ve reported the accident it’s time to get your vehicle repaired. Your insurance company will be able provide a list of authorized shops where you can take the vehicle in for a quote and/or repairs.
