Is it Time to Buy MAZDA Tires from Medlin MAZDA?

Mazda tires

The new MAZDA CX-9 is surprisingly nimble for a three-row SUV that weighs just over two tons. You can give credit to the SKYACTIV®-Chassis, expertly-engineered suspension, or even the optional i-ACTIV AWD®, but don’t forget the role played by Mazda tires. Humble though they may be, they ensure the handling and safety you deserve!

Is it Time for New Tires?

Before we get into the nuts and bolts of choosing new tires, how can you tell if it’s time to visit the Mazda parts department here at Medlin Mazda to shop for replacements?

  • Your tires are old; low-mileage tires, including your spare, should be replaced every five to six years even if they look fine
  • Your tires lose pressure frequently, or have visible damage, especially to the sidewalls
  • Tread depth is too shallow; replace if it’s below 1/16 of an inch
  • You notice that your fuel economy has dropped
  • The steering doesn’t feel like it used to
  • Stopping distances are longer, and acceleration takes longer than it once did

Tires in poor condition render your vehicle more prone to skid or hydroplane, too, so worn, old tires aren’t worth taking your chances.

How to Choose Tires

Most new Mazda models ship with all-season tires that will perform fine in any weather. With that being said, certain applications can call for more specialized tires installed at a Mazda service center; a Mazda MX-5 Miata is twice as fun with performance tires in the summertime, while certain hauling or towing applications can call for a higher weight rating.

Your Wilson Mazda dealer will also help you decipher the seemingly arcane code on your new tires. Take the Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition, for instance; it comes equipped with P225/55R19 tires, which translates to:

  • P: Passenger-rated tires
  • 225: Width, in millimeters, at widest point
  • 55: Tire profile, which is the aspect ratio (percentage of height to width)
  • R: Radial tire, the most common type sold
  • 19: Wheel width
  • Tires will also have additional codes for load, speed, and driving condition ratings, depending on the brand and type chosen

MAZDA Tire Care

We also suggest taking steps to care for your tires between replacements.

  • Maintain proper air pressure, indicated in your owner’s manual
  • Rotate your tires; schedule rotations with oil changes so you don’t forget
  • Don’t neglect wheel alignment
  • Inspect tires periodically for signs of rot, wear, or damage
  • Take advantage of our Mazda parts specials instead of taking chances on cheap tires
