In 1931, the name “Mazda” was officially introduced in Japan with the “Mazda-go” tricycle truck, its first official vehicle release. The company didn’t adopt the name Mazda, however, until 1984.

The name Mazda is a tribute to Ahura Mazda, the god of harmony, intelligence, and wisdom. It is also a derivative of Jujiro Matsuda, one of the founding members of Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd., who created the name. The pronunciation of his last name sounds remarkably similar to Mazda.

Mazda cars and SUVs are produced by the Mazda Motor Corporation. The company, located near Hiroshima, Japan, has been the sole manufacturer since 2015. From 1979 until 2015, Ford owned part of the company, eventually even owning a controlling share. In 2015,  Ford sold its shares, making Mazda a standalone company.
